Golf season is finally upon us!  Unfortunately, sometimes golf related injuries fall upon us too.  The best way to avoid an injury is with proper conditioning through fitness, proper grip and swing.  But even professionals can be affected by the stress of the repetitive motions of golf.  The most common golf injuries occur in the lower back (lumbar spine), elbows, shoulders, hands and wrists.  An acute injury is one that occurs suddenly, in a dramatic fashion, and therefore is quite obvious.  An injury that is not as noticeable at the time but progressively gets worse over time is known as a chronic injury.   In both cases, paying attention to the warning signs and symptoms of an injury can lead to a faster, more favourable recovery and avoid more serious damage and/or long term issues.
Because many of these injuries are soft tissue related, x-rays often may not reveal the problem.  Even stress fractures of the hamate (one of the small bones in the wrist) can be missed with an x-ray, requiring further imaging with CT or MRI.   Serious acute injuries that may require surgery will often have MR imaging done first to assist with the operative and rehabilitation plan.  Chronic injuries that don’t respond to physiotherapy and other conservative treatments may benefit from an MRI exam to help determine the root of the problem.  Image One MRI is proficient in joint imaging with state of the art equipment to help you stay out of the “bunker”.  Feel free to call us with any questions!
